This is an idea adapted from the epic Mahabharata on analyzing the decision making techniques of the Pandavas (the princes’ of Hastinapura)
Listen to all suggestions but keep the decision with you, is one of the best mantra for decision making. Never take a decision under the influence of emotions like anger, anguish, frustration or extreme happiness.
Let us enter the shoes of Pandavas, and see how we can visualize the problem/challenges from various angles before taking a decision, as they have different styles of thinking. ( The brothers' names are as per order: Yudhishtra, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva.)
- Think like Yudhishtra who believes in avoiding confrontation. (Though in some cases we need to confront positively rather than avoid). He knows how to stand by ethics and when to leave them. He is always in process control, looks at the problems intuitively and understands the responses of people who cannot appreciate his reasoning.
- Bheema believes in his strength. He keeps going when everything looks gloomy and difficult.
- Arjuna is the best technician but he tries to see why it might not work. He prefers to spot fatal flaws and risks before embarking on a course of action. To get his doubts clarified, he takes the expert’s advice.
- Nakula is an expert in training horses. A person who can tame animals can understand other’s behaviour best. He is for creativity.
- When contingency plans are required all the 4 brothers consult Sahadeva. Sahadeva can look cautiously and defensively at all the negative points of the decision. He wears the 'black' hat and thinks critically.
When you take a decision based on the above five virtues, the support by name “Krishna” ( supreme consciousness) is always with you.
